Discovering Oil and Gas Revserves with 32 Touches

The world’s first Quad Full HD Multitouch Panel was presented by Fraunhofer IAIS, Barco and Citron.
Designed to aid the analysis of seismic data during oil exploration, the system is the first of its kind in the world and is targeted primarily at decision makers and analysts in the oil and gas industry.

At the heart of the system is a Barco manufactured 56” display with a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels combined with the dreaMTouch. The Barco display delivers crisp, clear and color-accurate perfect images and the resolution needed by the oil and gas experts. The software, developed by Fraunhofer IAIS, uses seismic data acquired during oil exploration to look at rock formations below the seabed and allows oil and gas experts to work as a team to analyze and interpret potential oil or gas reserves. “Several people can easily work together at a time in front of the 56“ display as the portable VRGeo Multitouch recognizes 32 simultaneous touches”, emphasizes Dr. Manfred Bogen, coordinator of the VRGeo Consortium at Fraunhofer IAIS. “In order to guarantee success, the planning of bore holes requires the input and joint effort of a number of different specialists, each with their own area of expertise.”

The multitouch panel was developed especially for the VRGeo Consortium, a group made up of representatives from different international oil and gas companies. “Initially, we will be using the panel to analyze seismic data emanating from the oil and gas industries. However, we already see it in a variety of other application domains such as medicine, the military and the real estate business”, states Bogen. The development team at Fraunhofer IAIS first presented their new multitouch panel at the VRGeo Consortium’s annual meeting on December 14, 2010 in Sankt Augustin, Germany, and a number of VRGeo member companies are already planning to use the system within their organizations.
